Energy drinks have been on the news during the last year or so, being blamed as one of the causes of the obesity problem in this country. The problem is not only energy drinks, but whole eating habits of families.
I have never had an energy drink and neither my son. Why? Because we dont need them. We are not high performing athletes who need to recharge vitamins, minerals and what-not. Energy drinks are full of sugar. A sugar that we are not going to burn for energy, because the most exercise we do is to walk from/to shool and play on the backgarden, for example.
But Energy drinks have a very strong marketing behind. Take Red Bull, sponsoring the jump of Felix Baumgartner from the stratosphere, and a lot of extreme events.
So you might not like it, but you might find difficult to discourage your kids from drinking energy drinks. You could then try the DIY alternative.
DIY Energy drink
* 1 cup lemon juice (approx 6-8 lemons)
* 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
* 1 teaspoon sea salt
* 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Place in a pint mason jar and shake to combine, keep concentrate in the fridge. This can be added to 1 gallon of water, or add 1-2 tablespoons to each 8 ounces (1 cup) of water.
If you give it a try, let us know how you got on!
